Playlist caught Skinnyman doing his thing in the big top, and our old mate Purple 59, a rapper from Jerusalem, who was visiting us, got onstage and did a bit of freestyling with the man himself. It was a great day out for all the family and a good warm-up for next weeks Glastonbury Festival. Well done Stokefest organisers. 11.06.05: Welcome to Playlist, where you are the DJ. The Underground Bar is underneath the Three Tuns Bar the end of Houghton Street WC2, which is just off Aldwych. It's great for transport links too-loads of buses and a few minutes walk from Holborn tube. See you all there. 23.05.05: Playlist on May 21 was a good one - fuelled by mad mash-ups, beer, silent Eurovison on the big screen and DJ Dangerous Colin's lovely wig! 12.05.05: The winner of our April online competition is Yasir Gulzar from Reading. He's arranged a couple of laid back afternoon to evening Sunday DJ sessions to say goodbye to London, which he wants to invite you all to. The first one is this Sunday (April 10) and features DJs Pablo Samba, Darren Vega, Chalky White, Onyx and the legendary Jazzie B (Soul to Soul). The party is from 3pm-12am at Meet, 85 Charterhouse Street EC1, (next to Fabric) and is £5 before 7pm and £8 after. There's another one on Sunday April 17, featuring Felix from Basement Jaxx too. Get yerselves down there. We will miss Onyx down at Playlist, he is the spirit of digital DJing - he just turned up one night and blew our minds. To help them out we are offering the printable guide as a free download. 28.03.05: March 26 was a great night for new, old, original music and digital experimentation- they were some of the best sets yet. We found another Simon Cowell-type judge and we were pleased to feature in David Rowan's Trendwatch column in the Saturday Times Magazine, so celebration was on the cards... 22.03.05: We seem to be suffering unusual email problems right now, so we have set up a new email address as a fallback system. The next London event on March 26 is offering a limited number of DJ slots for advance bookings. If you would like to book a slot, or have experienced email problems, please contact us here. 21.03.05: Playlist decamped to Bath for the weekend to visit our friends and Playlist helpers Tamar and Mark. We did a tour of some great venues and ended up at the Porter Butt watching a great new band called The Girls. On Sunday we were found in the back room of the very sorted Bell pub participating in the monthly Ukulele group! It's a get together of Ukulele and banjo players, who welcome people to come along and play kazoos and sing along (they gave out song sheets!) to such classics as Ring of Fire and YMCA! Very unusual and highly recommended. Ukuleles are happening...just check out the UK festival favourites The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain as an example. 19.03.05: Playlist house DJ Lisa Rocket had the crowd at The Big Note in the red room at The Comedy jumping about and singing along till 2am last night. She's there every other Friday, after the bands from about 10.30 till 2am. She's there again on 1st April, but if you can't wait till then, she's DJing from 9-10 and 1-2 (the jump about session) at the next Playlist at the Progress Bar on Saturday March 26. 15.03.05: Some great news just through for all you Playlist People in the US, who are planning to attend the Playlist Philadelphia event on March 28. Check this page for details of what the best DJs on the night could win. 03.03.05: February 26 was another great party: this month was rock night, last month was dance - what's next? We never plan what's going to happen- you lot decide! 28.02.05: Thanks to everyone who came to the party on the 26th February, it looked like everyone had a good time, and so did we. If anyone was wondering what Jonny was doing with a big pair of headphones on at the beginning of the night, that was a live interview with Radio 5. We are putting together the images and playlists from the night today. Check back soon for more news and updates, including our first US event in Philadelphia. 23.02.05: The iPodKitz from this month's sponsors, ItzKitz, are fantastic gift-wrapped goodness for any iPod owner. Here's what Ashlee Vance says about Playlist. You are the DJ. See you this Saturday (and if you can't make it down, try the competition). 23.02.05: News in today: Apple has revamped its entire iPod range, with new iPod minis (available in 6GB (£169) and 4GB (£139) sizes), an updated low-cost iPod photo range (with £120 lopped off the top-of-the-range model) and the reduction of the classic iPod family to just one 20GB unit. iPod min's now offer 18-hours of battery life. Two versions of iPod photo are available: the £249 30GB unit and the 60GB iPod photo, which now costs £309 (formerly £429). The 20GB iPod now costs £10 less than before - £209, and is the only iPod now available with a FireWire cable in the box. By the way, you can help us keep things going if you choose to buy an iPod from Apple using this link. 20.02.05: We have published Playlist's exclusive interview with the HP team developing a device they see as "the next-generation" of digital music, the DJammer. This device promises a whole new world for digital DJ's. Check out the report here. 18.02.05: We have opened the DJ list for advanced bookings for the next Playlist on Saturday February 26. If you would like to sign up for a DJ slot email us. We have a limited number of advance slots available, so get registered soon as we had to close the list early for the last party. 03.02.05: Our January 29 party was great, we enjoyed returning DJs, dancers and judges and met new friends. Party people travelled from Deptford, Bath, Cambridge - even Milan - to indulge in our digital diversity. It was our first night downstairs at the Progress Bar and we had a great time. It was quite a dance music-oriented night, even eclectic electric gabba fan DJ Jason suprised us with Fat Boy Slim, Underworld and the Prodigy. Long-time Playlist helper DJ Tamar seized her new 'Pod to take the brave first-on slot, introducing the night with doses of Chumbawamba, Chicks on Speed and Ultraviolence's version of Paranoid! Our crowd got a little lively to Tamar's Moldy Peaches track, 'Downloading porn with Davo' - but our Judges seemed undecided.... 30.01.05: Thanks to the Playlist massive who made last night's event our favourite party yet. We had a great time. The judges? Hmm. Chaotic and useless, as usual. The music kicked, our prizewinners were: winner, DJ Uncle, runners-up, DJ Hugwash and DJ Jason, though our respect goes to every Playlist DJ last night. We had visitors from Milan, Italy, and DJ Onyx amazed us all. Pictures, playlists, a complete report and more will follow (once our hangovers subside). Thanks to everyone - and the Progress Bar staff - for a great night. Next party is on February 26. 25.01.05: Radio 6 DJ and hit record-making musician Tom Robinson will DJ on Thursday January 27 at Offline at the Dogstar in Brixton, starts at 7pm. There's a HUGE host of entertainment on the bill on that free night. We met Tom at a making music on a Mac seminar last year, he's still true to the DIY ethic, and actively encouraged anyone who wants to make music to try first with GarageBand, he even remixed fab track Power In The Darkness on his Mac using the software for its rerelease last year. Tom's cool. You can get more information on the event here. 25.01.05: Playlist went way out west last night to see the fab Pop Will Eat Itself, making a return to playing live after a few years away. If you haven't heard any of their music you ought to- and as we commented to a guy from Radio 6 music news last night outside the gig- the music sounds just as current and fresh as when we last saw them several years ago. The Shepherds Bush Empire was really jumping. We hope they will be following up the great live gigs with some new tunes soon. 24.01.05: We have had a huge demand for pre-booked DJ slots for the next party on Saturday 29. To be fair to people who turn up early to book on the night, we have now closed the pre-book list to retain some slots, which will be issued on a first come first served basis from 9pm on Saturday. All DJ's with pre-booked slots must turn up to confirm their booking by 9.30pm. See you all on Saturday. 20.01.05: We are delighted to announce the next Playlist party, which takes place January 29 at The Progress Bar in Tufnell Park. It's being sponsored by iPod World UK, and there's a valuable iPod shuffle (which goes on sale in the UK on January 29) and two sets of Logic 3 iPod speakers as prizes for the best DJs on the night. We start at 9pm and close at 2am, see you there. By the way, you can help us make a little money to keep things going if any of you choose to buy an iPod from Apple using this link.
20.01.05: We have a new format for Playlist on January 29. We'll open at 9pm downstairs at the Progress Bar with the competition starting at 10pm. Come along to sign up between 9-10, or email us to pre-book (you'll need to show up by 9.30 to confirm your slot if you book ahead). We also have a free drinks voucher for every judge on the night. The competition ends at 1am, when winners will be declared, and resident iDJ Lisa Rocket, prize-winners and guests will play us out until 2am. 20.01.05: We'd like to announce two new features on Playlist's Web site. First of all we have Playlist's Lisa Rocket and her advice for iDJs: how to set your iPod up for the best possible results when you play your tunes at a party. Second we have Tamar's Subversive Sounds column which explores the mysterious world of mash-it-ups. We have many more articles scheduled. Keep dropping by. 20.01.05: We posted Lily Kwan's Naked News report about October's Playlist party briefly online in November, but had to remove it as it proved incredibly popular. Now, for a limited period, we have made it available once again for everyone who missed it. If Naked News isn't your thing, why not check out this quirky and surreal iPod video, produced for BBC Three comedy: Think a Twin Peaks iPod world. 12.01.05: Just when we've got used to the iPod mini, the iPod photo and the U2 special edition iPod, Apple bring us yet another iPod. Steve Jobs in his keynote speech at the San Francisco Mac show announced the iPod shuffle. The Shuffle is a 512mb (120 songs) or 1gb (240 songs) flash based memory mp3 player. Apple describe it as "smaller and lighter than a packet of chewing gum". The players, designed to be worn on a lanyard (shipped with one), are £69 and £99 respectively and work with iTunes, selecting random songs from the iTunes library or playlists. 12.01.05: In response to the tsunami disaster, there are a number of benefit gigs and fundraisers being organised all over the country. Two good London gigs are at Bar Lorca, 261 Brixton Road on Saturday 5th February, and the Hackney Empire on Tuesday 8th February. The Bar Lorca gig features music and cabaret from the Top Cats, The Larry Love Show Band (featuring members of Alabama 3), Gwendoline D Armour, Stompy and Sam Love. There will also be DJs from Offshore State Circus, People's Republic of Disco, Squall, On U Sound, Future World Funk and Surfers against Sewage. There are more acts to be added to the line up and there will be speakers from the affected areas. Tickets can be purchased from onlinestall.com or by calling 0207 267 8320. The Hackney gig features music from the Blockheads, Comedy from Mark Thomas, Rob Newman, Id Barr, Caroline Parker and Stickleback Plasticus. There will also be circus from Incandescense and an old friend of Playlist Miss Behave, who is a world famous female sword swallower. Other acts include Glastonbury festival favourites the Laundrettas, and Miniscule of Sound, the worlds smallest disco. There are special guests still to be announced. Tickets can be purchased from the Hackney Empire on 0208 985 2424. 23.12.04: We'd like to wish everyone who has supported the Playlist Club this year a great Christmas and exciting New Year, we'll be back in full effect in January. Here's a Webjay mix from Matt to keep you rolling, and a silly seasonal game to play while he does. 01.12.04: Thanks to everyone who came to our last party on November 27th. We had another good night of diverse music and a lot of love for our Robosapien, who stole the show as he boogied around the dancefloor waving his glowstick. We didn't get many photos from the night as Mark, who usually takes the pics had car trouble and got stuck in Bath. The ones we did get are here. Lisa did remember to get some of the DJs to write down their playlists on the night and a big thanks to the DJs who have emailed them in since then. You can see what they all played here. 22.11.04: Just a reminder for all you people across the world (and in the UK) who can't make it to our next party on November 27th, we have a competition on the website- you too can win prizes! Just send us your 15 minute playlist and an explanation in 30 words or less about why your playlist is the best. You can win a set of MX550 Senneheiser headphones courtesy of our sponsor www.everythingipod.co.uk. The closing date is November 30th. 21.11.04: We received 33,612 site visits in three days following our publication of Lily Kwan's Naked News report on the Playlist Club. We had the bandwidth, but it's running out, so we had to limit the clip's availability. If you'd like to see it, please write to us, saying you are over 18, and we'll send you a link. We'll make it available again next month. 20.11.04: The new Apple Store London and the first in Europe, opened it's doors at 10am today to a huge queue of tired people from all over the world who had been camping out in very cold weather since Thursday evening- that's dedication! The first people in the queue were given beautifully boxed Apple T-shirts and sets of new iPod socks. We're still not sure about the socks, what do you lot think? The store itself is Apple all over- a triumph of classic minimalism. The glass staircase in the centre of the store is beautiful. Playlist got a bloke at the Genius Bar to sort out our airport card- thanks Mr Genius! 15.11.04: Playlist got our Passports out and went to South London on Saturday night to say goodbye to our old friend Alex who's Leaving London to live up a mountain in Wales. He was having his leaving party at a very excellent club called Ministry of Unsound. The club is monthly at Bar Lorca, 261 Brixton Road, 9pm till 6am. Playlist will definitely be going again as we had a brilliant time, the crowd were really friendly and well up for it. The organisers of Unsound have been around for years on the underground scene and know what makes a good party. There was live music courtesy of DubDadda, who had come all the way from Manchester and performed with the Crispy Horns brass section from Love Grocer. He was mixing live dub plates and MCing over the top and they really got the whole place jumping. If any of you don't know who DubDadda is, he has been in lots of great bands over the years including the excellent Zion Train, Nucleus Roots and (one for the oldies!) Community Charge. He really kicked it in the dance tent at Glastonbury this year too. There were some great (vinyl) DJs on including our old mate Dubversion from Peoples Republic of Disco, who loves a good mash it up tune and has promised to get us a copy of the fab Uptown top Ranking/We will rock you in time for the next Playlist! There were also some good MCs doing their thing over all sorts of tunes being spun by Offshore. Playlist particularly liked MC L.O.A.D. and had a good chat with him after his session. Not only is he a good MC, but he's also a really nice bloke too. So check out the next Unsound if your in the Brixton area on Saturday 18th December. The live band on the night will be the Inner Terrestrials, who's drummer is Paco from the legendary punk band Conflict and there will be DJs, MCs and VJs too. 03.11.04: The mixtape phenomenon has entered the mainstream, with iTunes US now offering a monthly legal hiphop mix tape for download, "Street Official Mixtape, Vol. 1". The first of its kind, the tape will be changed monthly, with a mix for free and links to downloads of the original songs. 03.11.04: Our friend on the West Coast, Scott G's ('The G-Man') new release 'The Platinum Age of the Remix' will be announced (unanimously) as the Trance Remix album of the year during the LA Music Awards on November 18. 02.11.04: iPodlounge - one of the world's first dedicated iPod Web sites - has released a completely free guide to iPods and iPod products. It's available for free as a PDF download, and even includes one of the world's first iPod Photo reviews. 01.11.04: Playlist went to see the Scissor Sisters at the Brixton Academy last night. It was a massive disco fest! The majority of the audience were in halloween costume and a massive party mood. The band were dressed as characters from Rocky Horror and had the entire audience right to the back of the Academy jumping. It's a definite contender for 'Gig of the year'. Playlist saw Simon 'Shaun of the dead' Pegg on his way to the bar and complimented him on his zombie makeup. He said he'd had it done by people in the audience and hadn't seen it yet! 30.10.04: Anyone who made it to the last night on October 23 will know that Playlist hosted a Naked News TV crew on the night. We met lovely Lily Kwan. She let us know that the segment - Naked Goes Pop - is airing on the channel's current programme online and will be shown on Get Lucky TV, Sky 235 (in the UK, available internationally) within the next few days for all you satellite viewers. 30.10.04: Playlist iPod DJ Lisa Rocket rocked the house last night at The Big Note (near Piccadilly) - people moved, grooved and danced on tables! Should be there again in a couple of weeks. 28.10.04: Playlist secured a hot ticket tonight, and we went to The Design Museum to hear Jonathan Ive, who designed the iPod and iMac, talk about how he designs, making complex things very simple and resonant. We had a quick word with him afterwards, told him we were putting our iPods to good use, and invited him to the next party on November 27. He's a nice guy. Welcome to Playlist, Jonathan, you are the DJ! 26.10.04: Playlist house DJ, Lisa Rocket, plays at The Big Note once again on Friday October 29, at about 10.30pm (until 2am). 26.10.04: We had a fantastic first night on October 23rd in our new home The Progress Bar. Even better was the fact that lovely Lily Kwan and her crew from Naked News came to see what digital diversity can do to the dancefloor. Lily was around all night interviewing DJs and Judges and she told Playlist that they had a really good time. We will be on TV soon, so watch this space. 26.10.04: Farewell John Peel. Thank you for the music. Our sympathy to his family. 26.10.04: Apple has extended iTunes to many more European countries, introduced a limited edition U2 iPod, and launched a new 60GB colour screened iPod Photo. You can find more information about these, and buy them if you like, using the links on this page. 24.10.04: Hi Playlist Party People - thanks to all of you who made it down last night, and if you couldn't make it, there's another night on November 27. Thanks too to Lily and her Naked News team, you'll see us on TV soon. We had such a good night, and will be updating the site with pictures and playlists in the next two days (once we've recovered). By the way, house DJ, Lisa Rocket was having such a good time, she forgot to get the set lists of last night's DJs, so if you played last night, send them too us. 23.10.04: Playlist takes place tonight at The Progress Bar, 2 minutes from Tufnell Park Tube. We also just learned we have a TV crew coming down, come along and join the party. 19.10.04: Apple won the best download music service at tonight's Digital Music Awards, Playlist was there, waiting for a beer at the bar (along with everyone else). 19.10.04: Playlist had a visit from Melanie from Westminster Uni radio on Saturday, down at The Progress Bar. We had a couple of beers and a really good chat. Welcome to Playlist, Westminster Uni - you are the DJ!! 18.10.04: DJ Lisa Rocket and DJ Savage had a great night at The Big Note on October 15, doing a duo alternating tracks to eclectic effect. We'll let you know the next date soon. 18.10.04: So Apple is holding a special music-related event on October 26, where Steve Jobs, Bono and the Edge will announce new news. There's lots of rumours around, such as iTunes Europe, video iPod, U2 album on an iPod, or a mini mini iPod mini, but no one's talking DJammer. 14.10.04: Apple has sold two million iPods in three months, and has shifted 150 million tracks through iTunes. So, if you have an iPod (or other music player), come and share your sounds at Playlist, and if you can't make it - please tell your friends. See you on October 23, :-) 14.10.04: Don't forget - Playlist house DJ Lisa Rocket pods some tunes on October 15 at The Big Note (in the West End) in the Red Room at The Comedy Pub, 7 Oxenden Street,Piccadilly Circus, W1. 14.10.04: Apple continues to promote GarageBand through .Mac with 300 free sound loops for music-makers. 14.10.04: Napster today began selling pre-paid song sale cards through Dixons stores, handy if you don't have credit cards, and Apple does this in the US. We love sounds at Playlist, and think they should both get these into WH Smith and corner shops. 12.10.04: So, U2 have released an exclusive iTunes and iPod-supporting video that is available through iTunes Store - and guess what? It's rumoured U2 will play Glastonbury Festival next year. I wonder how they will do that in silhouette? 11.10.04: We hear HP Labs may be working on a handheld digital DJ tool that lets you mix, change tempo, pitch shift and more, using MP3s. It's called the DJammer at the moment. More news will emerge soon, we think. 11.10.04: Today we welcome the first iPod DJ night in The Netherlands, which takes place November 27 - the same night as November's Playlist party. If you are near The Hague's GEM Museum, get on down. Good luck Holland. 07.10.04: Playlist resident DJ Lisa Rocket and also DJ Savage are 07.10.04: We've begun street promotion around London, our next night's in a couple of weeks, so we are pounding London's wet streets to distribute our flyers. You'll find us at events, in record shops, at parties, any place music lovers go. Grab a flyer, spread them around. and if you want to help - just get in touch. Get connected with the eclectic electric. 07.10.04: Our friends in Washington US, the Cricklewood Massive, celebrate six months of 'Podding' at Cafe Saint-Ex on October 13. 07.10.04: Agree or disagree, we love music, and Factory Records founder, Tony Wilson, has a point: "I am always amazed that the people who profess to love music are prepared to pay their council tax to politicians they don't like, their bank charges to bankers they despise, but choose to rip-off and steal from the musicians who are supposedly the great influences in their lives." Don't steal music. 04.10.04: Playlist is thrilled to announce our new sponsors - Rip and Burn Magazine. 18.09.04:We have announced the winners of September's online Playlist competition. Read the winning playlists here. 14.09.04: We have decided to move Playlist to a new venue. Why? We needed a PA with punch and a place that delivered. We are progressing to the lovely Progress Bar. Come with us on October 23. 12.09.04: : September 4th was another fun night.. Thanks to everyone who came to DJ, judge and party. As always, you were all stars. Check out some of the playlists from the night here and some of the pics from the night here. It was also Jonny's birthday - he realised that friends can be very inventive with their presents. He was shocked to find that a few had clubbed together to get him a parachute jump! Thanks to Gil, Anne- Marie, Jo, Clare and Andy for that one....Watch this space for news of the jump the future. Back to the club.... DJ Uncle had all the Judges waving tune cards throughout his set and DJ Topcat even had certain members of the crowd pogoing to the Archers theme! Of course, it's not all TV worship at Playlist - we had lots of floor fillers spanning virtually every musical genre - it's all about digital diversity, after all. We heard some fantastic mash-it-up tracks courtesy of DJ JD, DJ Topcat and DJ Uncle. If any mash-it-up artists are reading this, get yourselves down to Playlist because we love your sounds. DJ Ellie returned and brought DJ Twiglet along, too - those goth chicks sure know how to party! Thanks to DJ Digit for coming through with the much loved William Shatner version of Common People and DJ David for packing the floor with Dead or Alive. You didn't write down your playlists guys, send them to us. DJ Jason's surprised us all with his kickin' gabba set - and it went down well with the party people. A big thanks to VJ Neil for dropping by to add some great visuals to the party. Once again, thanks to all the stars that make Playlist such a fun night. Remember, you don't need an iPod to join the party, lots of people come along just to dance to diverse tunes and generally have some fun. See you all at the next party in October. We're having a couple of weeks off, so keep checking back here for the next date. NEWS: On September 10 Playlist house DJ Lisa Rocket took the pods out to guest DJ at the Big Note Club in Picadilly. We're sure it was the first time the West End's ever seen iPod DJing - people queued up to ask questions about it. It was a great night, people partied and jumped around till 2am. Thanks to Mark at Big Note for inviting us, Lisa may be there again, so watch this space. Playlist DJs are available for weddings, parties, clubs, contact us. Same rules apply for our next event in October so email us your playlists now! If you want to know anything about this event, or even to sponsor it, please contact us!
There's lots of fun stuff in store for this big birthday event, INCLUDING: a custom-painted 2GB iPod nano for the 1st place winner, surprise gifts for everyone who doesn't place in our top 3, video projections, a special post-Playlist DJ set, and the return of our very first judge, PW's Doug Wallen!
Read the great write-up that Maggie Serota gave Playlist Philadelphia.
DJ 'MC' Cyberfairy kicked off proceedings with a bit of KLF, Electric Six and the fab Bargain Hunt Booty David Dickinson techno. She smiled and waved at the judges, but this didn't convince this month's Simon Cowell, who awarded just one star for her efforts. We had just one Judges panel all night as the lads were keen for free drinks and (erm) consistency.
Playlist regular DJ Jason delivered a bangin' dance set but missed out on the big prize this time. DJ Dangerous Colin, DJ George's alter-ego, resplendent in blonde wig gave us a bit of Goldie Lookin' Chain and some cool covers. Eventual winner DJ Kinnie Kat wowed the Judges with her set, and for once even Mr Cowell had to agree. Poor DJ Mook played some good tunes, but the Judges weren't convinced, rang the bell and he was gone. DJ Reporter kicked off with Leonard Nimoy and followed up with some Clash and LCD Soundsystem.
It all got a bit silly when Colin's wig started circulating. House DJ Lisa Rocket discovered she should never go blonde - some cheeky clubber said she looked like a cross between Marilyn Monroe and Janet Street Porter. Possible blonde MC Cyberfairy took this opportunity to sneak up to the scoreboard and change her score, which led to pen confiscation and her being barred from going anywhere near the board for the rest of the night. New DJs Sally Cinnamon and Daisy Duke hit the vibe running and gave us a couple of great sets. Sally Cinnamon kicked off with the ever popular Common People by William Shatner following up with Bloc Party and Kings of Leon. Daisy Duke began with Aerosmith, Baby D and the Jam!
It was a great night for DJ Ellie, Playlist's star dancer, as it's one of the few times she's not been hauled off before the end of her set! One of the judges 'came out' as a Goth following her set, which just shows how anything can happen at Playlist. The Progress Bar's own DJ Cool Cool finished off the night with some Franz Ferdinand, NERD and sang along to Green Day with DJ Jason. It's a good job the judges weren't scoring him on his singing abilities! We thought we were all done, but following a public vote we allowed MC Cyberfairy another go as DJ Pasty (well, she begged). She had the dubious honour of playing the last tune of the evening- Combine Harvester by the Wurzels- a fine end to a great party.
See you again on June 1 at the LSE and on June 18 at The Progress Bar.
Returning DJ Blanche kicked off the night with a punk-inspired set including classics from The Clash and the Undertones, bringing it up-to-date with a sprinkling of The Libertines. New DJ Simon played one of our favourite covers, the fab How Soon is Now by Tatu, and threw in a bit of Killers and Go Team for good measure. DJ iRach, another welcome newcomer said, "why the funk not?" and gave us a groovy funky time with tunes by Funkadelic and Barry White. The very cool DJ Onyx returned and it all went experimental. His last set down at Playlist with live digital scratching wowed the crowd and this one didn't disappoint either. He was keen to experiment with live recording and production, so he played out his 15 minutes live on his space age wind synthesizer over a backing track of his own Beat Jazz. He then mixed it down at the club, added pictures of his performance to the file from his camera phone and burnt discs of the set - all in 15 minutes. Basement Jaxx didn't name a song after him for nothing! If you'd like a copy get in touch with him here. It's always hard to go on after Onyx, but DJ Last Precious Cookie seized the day, giving us a mixture of his own Shibuya inspired tunes alongside Cornelius and the great Pizzicato 5. DJ Dangerous P only wanted to play a couple of tunes and MC on the mike but we weren't really sure that Puff the Magic Dragon lived up to his DJ name! DJ Nick, who's one of our long time sensible judges, borrowed a Pod and spanned the ages from Louie Louie ending with a great Smiths remix. DJ Akimeder, our very own 'king of mash ups' and last month's well-deserved champion treated us to some more of his choice cuts. DJ Rolo, whose sets are always a favourite with us at Playlist and was one of our eventual winners gave us even more tunes to groove to - Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown and the Prodigy. Someone keen to DJ ran up to ask if he could play from his phone, but sadly we couldn't plug him in - always keen to please, we will look into that for future clubs. Latecomer and new DJ Dan finished the night off in grand style, charming our three lovely girl judges from Wisconsin by waving and smiling at them during his set - It worked! Well done to our winners DJ's Rolo, Dan, Blanche, Onyx and Nick, who walked off with prizes courtesy of Podgear. See you all next time on April 23. It's DJ Savage's birthday, so bring your disco anthems!
Club regular and fresh-faced iPod owner DJ George kicked it off with Alien Ant Farm, The Libertines and HIM. He was in celebratory mood, as he's just become engaged to the lovely Trish. Congratulations to both of you from us here at Playlist. Meanwhile, Jonny and DJ Savage were doing a live interview on Radio 5 Live in the corner of The Progress, thanks to a radio van with the tallest aerial we've ever seen.
Returning DJs included Goth lovelies Ellie and Twiglet. DJ Ellie as ever delivered that touch of va-va-voom, giving away her band (Toxic Frock) CDs - one track reached her Playlist, to a diverse mixture of love and derision. That lady loves to create an impact!
DJ Twiglet delivered a set of unusual cover versions, including KMFDM's cover of U2's Mysterious Ways - and the party kept moving. DJ AM returned with a rapidly growing bump, which will soon be AM Junior (AMjr) and played us a kickin' Aussie themed set. We wondered what was happening when we were besieged by a group of people in fancy dress - they were on their way to a fancy dress party but never made it! Fairy girl had a good time - she danced about and chatted to the judges. DJ Freak produced a well-thought-out mix, cramming 10 songs into 15 minutes. He started strong, (grabbing the crowd with a Billy Ocean Shotgun!) and took us all away.
DJ Kaz used her excellent musical taste, but hit a snag when the most creatively-critical judge we've ever hosted declared her (negative) 'thing' about Placebo. Maybe Playlist has found its Simon Cowell at last! We hope so. Springing to Kaz's defence, The Dancers booed the Placebo-induced score from that judge, but in a nutshell, that's the peril of democracy.
DJ Akimeder returned to treat us to a new mix of his own mash-ups. He likes to try his new tunes out on the crowd at Playlist and the dancers didn't let him down. The cricket theme has never sounded so good! Akimeder was our eventual well-deserved winner. DJ Kinnie Kat inspired us all to do the Timewarp, followed by a good hair-shaking to Guns 'n' Roses (ooh, our knecks). DJ Dom only wanted to hear Lamb on a big PA and did us a great set too! DJ Jason, flushed with success from his runner-up victory at the last Playlist, gave us a taste of Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins. Playlist regular DJ Savage, always a crowd pleaser with her unusual selections, gave grace once again with an unexpected blast of Crazy Horses by the Osmonds and the theme from Ironside! So many tunes, so little time. We are definitely looking forward to the next party on March 26. We hope to welcome you then.
DJ's Uncle, Hugwash and Pixel turned up. Playlist wondered what had happened to their TV theme tune obsessions from the old days when they played us their choice cut mash-ups and kicking dance tunes - though Pearl and Dean did make it into Hugwash's set.
DJ Onyx Ashanti came down and amazed us with his 15-minute set. Playlist thought that DJing with two iPods was pretty clever, but Onyx used a pocket computer with an Alesis AirFX unit as musical weapons to stun the gathering crowd with live scratching over his own Broken Beatjazz mix. We're hoping he plays his wind synth next time. He had plenty of us asking him questions afterwards, including Playlist house DJ Lisa Rocket. (She was last seen Sunday staring at the Alesis website, muttering 'I want that one!").
DJs Dunx and Bumpa made it all the way from Deptford to play us some of their favourite tunes including De La Soul and The Streets. DJ Rolo returned after delivering one of our favourite sets during November's party to play another blinder, bringing brave first-timer DJ Flippa. Flippa's diverse set included the Shangrilas and Funkadelic. And new friend smiling DJ Andrezz shared a little Chemical Brothers and Junkie XL. We were out of DJ slots, but we couldn't disappoint the IDG3, who shared a great - but chaotic set between them. We'd passed the point of no return by then, so we let DJ Lee play one tune too (Grange Hill v Nelly, by the way)! Take a look at all the night's music here.
It was a great night and we can't wait to see you all again on February 26. (Just enough time to build the perfect Playlist).29.12.04: Hi everyone. Like everybody, we at Playlist are incredibly saddened by the tragic events around the Indian Ocean. We had intended to update the site with news and more today, but instead today we'd like to urge all Playlist people to get involved and help.
There's a number of organizations - the Red Cross or Oxfam, for example, that need money now, and millions of people need help today. The Disasters Emergency Committee, acting as an umbrella group for all the various UK relief charities has also set up a donation phone line - 0870 6060900.
We are trying to come up with other ways we can help - so if any of you want to work with us on a benefit event of some kind, please get in contact with us now.We had a few returning DJs and some great new ones. We think it was the best selection of tunes we've had at Playlist so far. DJ Sneaky lived up to his name by producing a laptop rather than an mp3 player, but it's all digital and he was playing a good dance set so who were we to complain. DJ Keith also got us going with an excellent dance selection. DJ Kaz turned up with the smallest mp3 player we have ever seen at the club and surprised us by finishing her set with an irish jig. Spontaneous Irish dancing in over the knee PVC boots anyone? You know who you are! It was a first for punk too as we had a good pogo to Anarchy in the UK courtesy of DJ Savage and some Buzzcocks and Ramones from DJ AM. DJ Akimeder played a blinding mash up set of his own stuff. We loved his Spice Girls vs Eminem. Playlist should have told him about the Eminem vs Benny Hill we've heard recently! DJ Rolo's set had us skankin' away and we had some top Indie courtesy of DJ Snapple. DJs Twiglet and Ellie came again, but we ran out of time, so Ellie didn't get to play her set- sorry Ellie. DJ Jason was back again and brought DJ Deathly Toast with him. It was great to see our returning friends and make some new ones. The Playlist family is getting bigger every time. We are having a break for christmas but we hope to see you all back in the new year at our next party on January 29th.
21.11.04: While Playlist was at the Mac Expo we bumped into Mindlobster, who is a laptop musician, VJ and video director. He told us all about a Laptop music night coming up on Weds 24th November at Hat on Wall, 24-28 Hatton Wall, EC1. The night is a laptop jam with VJs, featuring performances by Mindlobster, J-lab, Fs_ion, Mission Creep, Sakoilsky and Shooting Footage. It starts at 7.30 and is free. Go to Mindlobster's website to get more info and a PDF of the flyer. Mindlobster (aka Martin Delaney) has recently written a good book called Laptop Music, which gives loads of practical advice about making and performing music on a laptop- check it out.
21.11.04: It's been a bit of an Apple-related last few days for us at Playlist. We were at the Mac Expo at the Business Design Centre in Islington. It was a busy show and we met lots of nice people with Pods who are up for a bit of digital diversity - welcome to Playlist, Pod People - you are the DJ! Apple was in full effect with the largest stand at the show. Playlist got a chance to look at the new U2 iPod and the iPod photo, and if you were there long enough you got to hear Vertigo over and over again! Playlist still thinks it's the best U2 tune for a long while though. There were some interesting Pod peripherals about too, like the new Solio solar powered iPod charger on the Disruptive Technology stand. Playlist could have done with one of them when the Pod ran out of power at Glastonbury this year! Bose was showing its lovely new Sound dock, which Playlist was looking at longingly, but sadly couldn't afford after having to cough up for a new 4G iPod following the sad demise of the old faithful 1G at Lisa Rocket's last DJ set at the Big Note at The Comedy.
16.11.04: Playlist regulars will know that the lovely Lily Kwan, entertainment journalist for Naked News, came to our last party on October 23. Her report was broadcast to over 90 million people worldwide. (Welcome world, you are the DJ!). Naked News has kindly granted us permission to make Lily's report available online (in QuickTime). This report contains nudity, please don't visit the page if you cannot agree that you are an adult, consensually choosing to watch this clip. If you are an adult (over 18, or 21 in some US states) and are happy with this, please click here.
11.11.04: Our good friend Taka from the wonderfully weird band Gobsausage is organising a benefit gig "SLASK" for UNIQUE -Rare chromosone disorder support group. The lineup is huge, with the legendary Swedish band Pippi and the Butcherbirds headlining and supports from The Noisettes and Spiral (featuring former SPK member Annie Stubbs and former
Alternative TV member Luciana Bocchino). There will also be performance art from Valerie Renay and Naz, multimedia and film from Sally Irvine, Liane Lang, Gillian McIver (Luna-Nera) and SDNA. The Compere for the night is Chris Adamson. The gig is on Wednesday 1st December at the 291 Gallery, 291 Hackney road London E2
7pm-2am and is only £5, with all proceeds going to UNIQUE. All that entertainment for a fiver and in aid of a good cause- get yourselves down there. 04.11.04: Playlist heard from assistant professor, Markus Giesler in Canada. He wants iPod stories. He's researching people's relationship with iPods, how do you use them? How are devices like this changing music, entertainment, and the world? He'd like to hear your story. How about it?
Thanks to all the DJs and judges for making the party happen. DJ Lisa Rocket forgot to ask the DJs what they played (sorry), so if DJs Pod, Pinchy, George and Lee are reading this, get your playlists emailed to us here and we will add them to the others from the night. Big thanks to DJ Savage for remembering to ask some of the other DJs what they played, without her we would have no playlists from the evening.
We will be adding pictures and some video clips from the night very soon. Playlist didn't notice there was heavy rain outside until we saw wet coats and trousers in the photos. Thanks for braving the weather Playlist Party People!
We heard some great diverse tunes on the night, from Belly Dance music to Bebel Gilberto. We even had S Club 7 courtesy of DJ Eat Pussy! By far the largest tunes of the night had to be DJ Squitchy playing House of Pain's Jump Around and whoever played Song 2 by Blur, which is fast becoming one of Playlists favourite floor fillers. Goldie Lookin' Chain and Outkast also seem to be getting quite popular with both the DJs and dancers.
Another big thanks to DJ Emergency, a collaboration of DJ's Gemma and Joe, who saved the day when DJ Lee went missing (again).
An honorable mention has to go to DJ Twiglet for being the first DJ to send her playlist by proxy, as she had an accident and hurt her leg, so get well soon Twiglet from all of us at Playlist and see you at the next party.
We think our new home at the Progress is great. We can't wait to see you all at the next party on November 27th.spinning, playing, PODDING tunes at The Big Note (in the West End) in the Red Room at The Comedy Pub, 7 Oxenden Street,Piccadilly Circus, W1 on Friday October 15. They are imposing their musical taste maybe, so come along and judge the DJs.
It was theme tune frenzy on September 4. Several of our DJs have realised the glory that is the TV theme tune, a trend begun in August with DJ Dab's 'Minder' dancefloor-filler.
